In April of last year, Audi announced a partnership with Navistar to develop a driver-assist system using C-V2X (Cellular vehicle-to-everything). The emerging technology enables direct communication between a vehicle and anything it may affect or be affected by. The goal is to provide drivers with advanced warning in situations that current vehicle safety systems can't. Over the past year, Audi has showcased C-V2X uses for school areas, construction zones, and cyclists. Now, with back-to-school season ramping up, the companies looked to demonstrate the technology's potential for use around school buses. Here's a quick overview of the basics.

Direct Vehicle Communication to Enhance Driver Alertness

Using a school bus from Navistar's IC Bus® brand and an Audi e-tron Sportback (now the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron), Audi showcased C-V2X communication between the vehicles. The technology allows vehicles to exchange signals ten times per second, up to 400 yards away. The drivers are able to receive alerts even if the other vehicle isn't visible—such as around a corner or over a hill. The result is more time for each operator to prepare and respond to different situations.

The school bus driver can use the information to make decisions while the bus is stopped. Examples include keeping the doors closed or instructing children to remain on the curb until it's safe to cross. In addition to refining current C-V2X use cases, Audi and Navistar plan to expand its application to motorcyclists, emergency vehicles, pedestrians, and more.
